 | 22nd Jan 2006 | Lanarkshire Lines
This collection covers the main line from Glasgow Central to Beattock and I had a lineside permit for photography. I have walked the whole line from Law Jct to Beattock in stages usually via the Parley train at 07.00 from Glasgow. Otherwise I got there by cycling and from 1966 by car. This was my main target line but I also enjoyed the Lanarkshire branches. I shall add a second collection of mainly black and white photographs later.

 | 5th Feb 2006 | Scottish Railways in the 1960s
A mixture of colour slides and black and white photos taken in Scotland in the period 1961 to 1966. This is my first collection and in time I shall move many of the photos to one of the other collections so not in any particular order I'm afraid. Hope you enjoy them anyway and feel free to copy them for your use. Some of them could be cleaned up as I have put the first ones on in a bit of a rush. Enjoy.

 | 12th Feb 2006 | Engine sheds
Pictures taken in Scottish sheds in the 1960s (1961 to 1965)
I was fortunate to have a shed and lineside pass for Scottish areas and this gives a flavour of all the old caley and NB engines still around and the general poor condition of the rest. The Glasgow sheds were not in the most salubrious of neighbourhoods but I only got beaten up once by the locals and never had my bike stolen.

| 12th Feb 2006 | East Kilbride line
Last years of steam from St Enoch to East KIlbride covering 1960 to 1966. This was my local line and I happily travelled to and from Glasgow University by steam train. The coaches usually spent the weeknights and weekends at East Kilbride unless required for summer extras to the Clyde Coast in which case they were returned on Saturday evenings.

| 13th Feb 2006 | Sou'west Main Line
Colour slides of the line from St Enoch to Carlisle in the last days of steam. There is cross cover with East Kilbride trains on the line from St Enoch to Busby Jct. Further south was mainly covered on bicycle trips with the return being via the Menock or Dalveen passes to the Caley mainline at Elvanfoot. I shall add a further collection of mainly black and white photos of this line at a later date.

| 27th Feb 2006 | Further North
Steam trains north of Glasgow in the 1960s.
This covers the period of 1962 to 1966 when the A-4s were the mainstay of the 3 hour expresses to Aberdeen with class 5s covering the rest of the Buchanan Street trains. Queen Street and Inverness trains were largely diesel hauled by that time so I have included steam trains from more recent times on these lines.
I hope to add the Gleneagles to Comrie branch in time as well as shots of the north and west of Scotland which were diesel hauled.. As a schoolboy/student money was always short and photography trips had to fit in with summer jobs. The camera was a Kodak Retinette 1A 35mm and the colour slides were Agfa 50asa.

 | 17th Mar 2006 | More Caley main line
The Duchess pacifics were still on the go at this time and I have included all my shots of them even though some were taken in poor light. In those days there was heavy traffic at both ends of the Glasgow Fair holidays and also lots of rain.
Diesels were ever more frequent and have been included as livery and numbering may be of interest.

 | 17th Apr 2006 | More Sou-West main line and East Kilbride
Some black and white shots between St Enoch and Mauchline. Again taken in the early 60s and of note are the Corkerhill Jubilees stored at Lugton complete with nameplates. In those days it never crossed our minds to remove them.
Then there are some black and white shots of the East Kilbride branch.

 | 17th May 2006 | Glasgow suburban and Clyde Coast
South side Glasgow suburban lines with Clyde Coast trains to Greenock, Gourock, Wemyss Bay, Fairlie and Ayr.

| 27th Aug 2006 | A trip to England
In August 1964 I was invited to stay with my cousins in West Wycombe whose back garden bordered onto the GWR/GCR joint line. They were also railway enthusiasts and knew their way round the English sheds as I did in Scotland.
The hospitality was second to none and I was taken around the London sheds, had organised trips to Swindon and Crewe courtesy of the Ian Allen Locospotters Club and my uncle drove us to places of railway interest.
Time was spent at Oxford and Basingstoke and for me it was fascinating to see ex GWR and SR locomotives for the first time.
The journey down was from St Enoch to St Pancras with steam as far as Leeds and the return was with diesel from Euston to Crewe and a Duchess Pacific from Crewe to Glasgow. I had also travelled from Paddington to Crewe and back behind another Duchess class.

Welcome to my collection of Scottish railway photographs mainly taken in the period of 1961 to 1966.
Thanks to those of you who left comments and I regret that it took me two years to discover this facility from fotopic so apologies for not replying. |
